Dressed in fine silk and holding a lady's fan on her delicate lap, the languidly reclining female figure in Dewing's exquisite work stares dreamily into a future to which the viewer is not invited. Known for his moody tonalist paintings with roots in English Aestheticism, American painter Dewing was a member of the Ten Painters, a group of American Impressionists who seceded from the Society of American Artists in 1897.
